Guardians in Paper and Paste
Date: 04/07/2026
This is a collaborative installation that reimagines monsters not as symbols of fear, but as guardians of virtue. Birthed entirely from layers of paper and paste, this installation brings to life the fictional, uncharted island of Paperia and its unique inhabitants.
Each creature was sculpted by a Secondary One student to embody a specific "good quality," such as resilience, empathy, or courage. Through the tactile process of paper-mâché, abstract values were transformed into physical traits. Every facial feature, exaggerated expression, and structural form is deliberate—a guardian of kindness might feature soft, welcoming contours, while a monster of courage stands tall with bold, sharp features.
Constructed from recycled materials, this diverse community of monsters reminds us that character and goodness are built just like paper-mâché: layer by layer, with patience, intention, and care.
